Isaiah 40:6-8
6 A voice says, “Cry!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. 7 The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.
It is tempting to become fixated on the temporal and external. We put a lot of emphasis on how we look on the outside, forgetting that the outside beauty will never last. Just like grass and flowers that wither and fade, so our external beauty will wither and fade (verse 7). Yet so much of our sexual fantasies are based on this fleeting exterior, never considering how that will change over time. If we could see the bigger picture, from God's perspective, we would understand that there is more to people than their exterior, and that no fantasy will last. That is one reason why fantasies or a more beautiful partner will never ultimately satisfy. Only the "word of our God will stand forever" (verse 8), and it follows that true joy and satisfaction will only come from God and the things that will stand for ever.
Lord, help me to see the big, long-term picture.
