1 Corinthians 6:12
12 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything.
Freedom, liberty, choices. We like those ideas. We do indeed have freedom to choose as we wish, but just because something is possible does not mean that it is a wise choice. As Paul says in verse 12, "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful". It is ironic that our "free" choices can lead us into bondage. But we are never completely free with our choices. In reality, choosing one way can make it harder to later choose another way, as our cumulative choices lead us further away from the original choices. Also, we are not as strong and independent as we like to believe. In reality we can become easily addicted to the habit of a particular choice, and find it incredibly difficult and scary to break free and choose otherwise. This is why we need to be careful with our early choices, for they will affect our later choices.
Heavenly Father, I confess to sometimes abusing my "freedom". Help me to choose wisely.
