1 John 1:8-10
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
We all sin. As verse 8 says, "if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves". We need to be honest and admit our failings. But it is not just honesty that motivates us, but also the hope of forgiveness. For the next verse says: "if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (verse 9). This is a great and comforting promise. We need to memorize and claim this promise when we feel defeated and want to run away .For our hope is in confessing and drawing closer to God, so that He can forgive and restore us.
Lord, I confess my sin, all of my lust, pride and other failings. Thank you for forgiving me.
