1 Samuel 17:45-47
45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hand.”
Are there any Goliaths in your life that you are afraid of? Perhaps some past sexual abuse or difficult relationship or maybe just lust itself. It is easy to get stuck in fear and hopelessness, and then sinking into despair and defeat. That is where the Israelites were when faced with the challenge of Goliath. It required a child (young David) to remind them that "the battle is the Lord's" (verse 47). This is the hope that we need to cling to in our recovery. When things seem hopeless, when we feel defeated, we must remember that the battle is the Lord's. It is not just our own strength and will-power that will win it (if it depended on our will-power we would have all lost long ago). Rather, there is an all-powerful God who is battling for us, and who will help us to overcome the Goliaths in our life.
God, I confess that sometimes I get stuck in fear and hopelessness. Help me to remember that You are bigger than my problems.
