2 Peter 2:9-11
9 Then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority. Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, 11 whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord.
In verse 10 Peter groups together "those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority". It is interesting that despising authority is put together with lustful passion. But I can relate, for I do not want anyone telling me what to do. There is a subconscious equating of authority with punishment, and we naturally fear punishment when we sin. But if we divorce ourselves from authority we become "bold and willful" (verse 10), unwilling to learn, and thus subject to an even greater punishment. The antidote is humilty and a willingness to learn and submit to authority.
Lord, help me to submit to You.
