Acts 7:51-53
51 You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.
In this chapter Stephen gives an account of God's working to the Jewish leaders, reminding them of how God's prophets have been killed and rejected through the ages, and ending with the harsh denouncement: "you always resist the Holy Spirit!" (verse 51). Like the Jews of old, we have the law, the knowledge of what is right and wrong, yet "did not keep it" (verse 53). The prophets were rejected because the people didn't like their message, and we often place our own desires above the uncompromising truths of God's law. This is a dangerous choice to make, for it stops us from seeing and hearing God's truth. We need to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit rather than resisting it.
Lord, may I be sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
