Amos 2:6-7
6 Thus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals— 7 those who trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth and turn aside the way of the afflicted; a man and his father go in to the same girl, so that my holy name is profaned;
It is interesting to note how often the prophets denounced not just the sexual immorality but also the financial immorality of the people. In verse 7 of this passage Amos has the two side by side, first decrying those "who trample the head of the poor" and then those who "go in to the same girl". The combination of these sins may at first seem like a random coincidence, but I think there is a deeper connection between them. The connection is selfishness. In both cases, I am more concerned with my own pleasure than with other people's needs. People become objects to be used for my benefit. The sexual behavior is just one fruit in the tree, but bad roots can produce much bad fruit, and if we only stop the sexual immorality and don't address the other immoralities in our life, we are not pleasing God.
Lord, forgive me for my selfishness.
