Amos 7:7-9
7 This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. 8 And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by them; 9 the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”
A plumb line is used to determine a straight line when building a wall. Without it one can "eyeball" the wall and say "it looks straight to me", but that doesn't mean it really is straight. You need an external reference. In the same way, we may subjectively decide that some sexual behavior feels okay to us, but we need to use the external reference of God's word to really know whether it is okay. There really is absolute truth, God's plumb line, that we will be measured against.
Lord, forgive me when I deviate from Your plumb line of truth.
