Deuteronomy 11:18-21
18 “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 19 You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 20 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21 that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.
The good news of God and recovery is something that we should share with others, particularly our children. The temptations we experience are not uncommon, but the answers we have found are. Talking about what we have learned (verse 19) not only helps us as reminders and a strengthening of our beliefs, but also helps others who can learn from us. This is especially true of children, who need role models that can relate to the temptations they are experiencing. Most of us fell into sin because we didn't know any better, but we can help the younger generation to have a strong foundation with which to resist temptation. We need to establish an ongoing, natural dialogue about God and sex and desire. Verse 19 says to talk about this stuff when you walk, when you sit around, etc. In other words not just a one-time Sunday morning lecture. This is an example of living out our faith in a visible way for those around us to see, and is also a conscious effort to share our recovery with others (the 12th step).
Lord, it feels uncomfortable to talk about sex. But if I don’t speak up about Your truths, then who will? Help me to share Your good news with others, especially our children.
