Ephesians 4:17-19
17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
In these verses Paul describes our previous, non-Christian life as being "due to their hardness of heart" (verse 18) and "have become callous" (verse 19). This describes someone who has become set in their ways, who doesn't listen to God but instead "have given themselves up to sensuality" (verse 19). The challenge for us to be sensitive, to listen to the still small voice of God. Unfortunately when we are stuck in sin we often become defensive or try to avoid God because we are afraid of what He might say. Similarly, we often are more susceptible to temptation when we become more hardened and think we are invincible.
Heavenly Father, help me to have a soft, humble heart that is open to what you want to say.
