Exodus 15:25-26
25 And [Moses] cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them, 26 saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.”
There are many good reasons to avoid sexual promiscuity. One possible reason is to avoid sexually transmitted diseases. This is affirmed by the promise in verse 26: if we follow God's commandments, we will avoid many diseases. This is not saying that all people who contract a disease are being punished by God. But it is saying that there are consequences to our actions. God knows and desires what is best for us (He is a God of healing as verse 26b says), and when we stray from God's plan we increase the likelihood of contracting sexual diseases. Frankly, if everyone practiced monogamous sex within marriage, the incidents of sexually transmitted disease would virtually disappear. But to reach that point we must "diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes" (verse 26).
Lord, part of me wishes that there were no consequences to my sins, but I know that is not the way the world works. I believe that you do desire what is best for us. So help me to listen carefully to You and obey.
