Exodus 20:14
"You shall not commit adultery"
Why is God against adultery? Here is a list of the 10 most important commandments, and adultery makes that list. Why not something more "reasonable" like "don't have non-consensual sex"? I think the reason adultery is singled out is that it is against God's character. Our God is a faithful God, who sticks to His word, who keeps His commitment to us. Adultery is about breaking our commitment, being unfaithful. In the biblical view, marriage is a covenant, a sacred commitment. God wants us to be faithful to Him and to each other. Adultery breaks that relationship. When Israel sins God accuses the nation of adultery, because they are being unfaithful to Him. So the action of adultery illustrates the state of our heart, and interferes with any relationship that is based on trust and faith.
Heavenly Father, sometimes I don’t feel like being faithful. Yet I am reminded how You are faithful to us even when we don’t deserve it. Help me to be faithful as You are faithful.
