Genesis 1:26-28
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Last time we looked at God the creator of the world. Now we want to focus on God as the creator of us as sexual people. Note that in verse 28 we are commanded to "be fruitful and multiply". In other words, be sexual! This command comes before the fall, thus showing that our sexuality was part of God's plan from the beginning. To be a bit crass about it, Adam had a penis in the Garden of Eden, and Eve had a vagina. So we shouldn't think these are "dirty" sinful parts of ourselves. God doesn't want us to be filled with shame about our bodies. Instead they are part of God's blessed and perfect creation. God created us as sexual beings, and our sexuality was meant to be a blessing. However, with our fall into sin our sexuality has sometimes become perverted (i.e. twisted, changed) into something immoral. But being sexual people is not itself sinful, it is what we do with our sexuality that can be sinful.
Lord, my sexuality can be confusing and scary with its desire, but I also know that it brings joy and fulfillment in my marriage. So thank you for the gift of sex, and help me to use Your gift wisely.
