Hebrews 2:1-4
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
In verse 1 the author warns us: "We must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away". It is depressingly easy to "drift away". Our problem is usually not that we purposely leave God and purity, but that we unintentionally drift away as we get distracted by other things, and then fall into temptation. Recovery is not a passive process; if we are not actively working on it, we tend to slowly backslide. This is why we are commanded to "pay much closer attention". It takes focus and attention to grow and develop. The enemy loves to distract us so that we lose that focus.
Heavenly Father, help me to pay attention to You and Your word.
