Isaiah 53:4-6
4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
We are all sinners. We are all "like sheep [that] have gone astray" (verse 6). Given that reality, what hope is there? This powerful poetic passage gives us the profound answer: the servant Messiah has taken our sins upon Himself. He has "carried our sorrows" (verse 4), "he was pierced for our transgressions" (verse 5), and "upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace" (verse 5). He did this so that we might have our sins forgiven and be made whole, for by "his wounds we are healed" (verse 5). This is the good, glorious news that gives us hope in recovery. We are not doomed to our past failures, but God lovingly takes on our hurts and sins, wipes the slate clean, and enables us to move forward into wholeness and healing.
Lord, thank you for your amazing sacrificial love and forgiveness.
