John 8:31-36
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. 33 They answered him, We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, You will become free? 34 Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
It is ironic that in an attempt to be free of rules and morality, we can end up being enslaved by our sin. Jesus says, "everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin" (verse 34). This is the definition of an addiction, that we become controlled by our addiction, in a sense becoming a slave to its desires. How often have I done things I thought I would never do, that I rationally did not want to do, but felt drawn to do because of the pull of the addiction. It is scary to realize how much we can become controlled by our addictions, by our sins. The only hope is to put our hope in Jesus rather than our sin, for "if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (verse 36).
Jesus, please set me free from my sins.
