Lamentations 1:18-19
18 “The Lord is in the right, for I have rebelled against his word; but hear, all you peoples, and see my suffering; my young women and my young men have gone into captivity. 19 “I called to my lovers, but they deceived me; my priests and elders perished in the city, while they sought food to revive their strength.
When you are in trouble, who are you going to turn to? It is tempting to go back to our old coping mechanisms, where we medicate and escape our stress by acting out. But those old coping mechanisms are like old lovers that will deceive us (verse 19). For they promise happiness but we end up empty-handed except for more shame and guilt. True help comes from the God of truth, not the deceit of fantasy.
Lord, forgive me for trusting in deceitful lovers.
