Luke 21:34-36
34 But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.
The Amplified Bible uses the term "self-indulgence" in place of "dissipation" in verse 34, and the Message Bible uses the phrase "parties". The idea is the same, to beware of getting caught up in indulging the pursuit of selfish pleasure. We may fantasize about living the party life, but that can be a distraction from our real purpose in life, and if we lose sight of our true purpose, we may lose our very soul. True life is not about parties and sex, it's about serving God and others. Jesus warns in these verses about getting so caught up in living "the good life" as the world defines it that we lose out on "the good life" that God offers us.
Lord, help me to keep a focus on my eternal destiny.
