Luke 6:46-49
46 Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.
This is a challenging passage for many of us, because we do consider ourselves Christian and we do call Jesus "Lord", yet we do not do what He says (verse 46). We know we should live pure lives, and we say that we want to, yet we do impure acts. Besides the obvious hypocrisy of that behavior, Jesus warns us that there are practical consequences. He says that this is like building "a house on the ground without a foundation" (verse 49). It may look nice at first, but when the storms come, the house will crumble. Similarly, how deep and strong is our faith if we are ignoring God's commands? It is easy to give lip service to our faith, but the true test comes when we are stressed by the storms of life. Will we turn to God, or to our addictions?
Lord, help me to turn to you, and do what you say.
