Matthew 4:8-11
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
Three times the devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness, and they were all temptations to trust something other than God. In other words, an idol. Whether it be food (verse 3), control (verse 6), or power (verse 9), they are all a form of idolatry, of trusting in something other than God. In each case Jesus responded with the word of God and with trust in God. His final reply summarizes his trust in God: "You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve" (verse 10). When I am faced with a temptation, will I worship and serve God alone?
Heavenly Father, help me to trust and serve You alone.
