Matthew 6:9-13
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
What does it mean in the Lord's prayer when we pray "lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" (verse 13)? This is not to suggest that God would actually tempt us or lead us to temptation. Rather, it is asking God to protect us from temptation and the snares of the devil. It is recognizing that we are weak, that we need God's help to resist temptation. I've often had the experience of being interrupted by a phone or some other "coincidence" when I've been tempted to sin, and I thank God for his help in those situations, as He provides a "way out" of the temptation.
Lord, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
