Numbers 32:23
23 But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out.
In chapter 32 some of the Israelites wanted to settle their families and livestock before going to battle. Moses agreed to their request, but warned them that if they failed to keep their word, they would be sinning against the Lord, and their sin would work against them. This is a sobering picture of sin and our choices. We tend to think that our choices are private, that what we do in private will stay private, and that our disobedience is not a big deal. But disobedience is important to God, and He will make sure that we face the consequences of it. The next time we contemplate indulging in some behavior that we know is against God's will, we would do well to remember this warning, for our sins will ultimately find us out.
Lord, I confess that I have often tried to hide my sin, in the hope that no one would find out. But that is a misguided hope. Help me instead to face my sin before my sin faces me.
