Proverbs 16:5
5 The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished
Proverbs 16:18
18 Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
One of the keys to recovery is learning to recognize the danger signs before a fall, and one of the danger signs should be pride (verse 18). Pride affects us in multiple ways. For one thing, when we are proud of ourselves and how we are doing, we tend to let down our guard, because we think that we are stronger than we really are. Pride also is a danger because it is self-centered, focusing on ourselves and what we "deserve" rather than on how to love others. To God's eyes, pride is often a bigger problem than the more visible sexual sin. Because God hates pride (verse 5), He may allow us to fall as a way of regaining our attention.
Lord, may I learn to humbly come before You.
