Proverbs 6:16-19
16 There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, 19 a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
This is a list of things that God hates, and at first glance there are no sexual sins, so we are tempted to breathe a sigh of relief. But these sins are all relational sins, and they are typically part of our sexual brokenness. When we fantasize and plan an illicit sexual encounter, we are one who "devises wicked plans" (verse 18), we are planning something that we know is wrong. How often have we lied (verse 17) about our sexual behavior to avoid being caught? At the moment we may think only about avoiding consequences, but the lie itself is a sin that harms our relationship with the other person. One might think that those of us who are sexually broken would be humble and non-judgemental, but all too often we are also marked by pride and a haughty superiority (verse 17), sometimes as a way of deflecting criticism of ourselves. The sad truth is that sin in one area of our life often goes hand in hand with sin in other areas of our life.
Lord, I confess that I have sinned in many ways. Please forgive my many sins.
