Psalm 135:15-18
15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. 16 They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; 17 they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths. 18 Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them.
You are what you worship. This can be good news if you trust God and want to be conformed to the image of God, but it can be bad news if you are putting your trust in a false idol. The psalmist writes of how the idols cannot speak or hear or see (verses 16-17), and then says that those who make the idols and those who trust in the idols will be like them (verse 18). This is obviously figurative and not literal, but there is truth to it. When we give ourselves over to false idols we lose the ability to see or hear the truth. We become blinded and deaf to God's truth, for God is pushed aside and we only are aware of the idol in our lives. This is a picture of what happens when we become trapped in an idol of addiction, where we get tunnel-vision and only see the obsession. God seems far away, but in reality we are the ones who have lost our senses.
Lord, forgive me for following empty idols. Help me to see and hear You.
