Psalm 42:1-6
1 As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, "Where is your God?" 4 These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival. 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation 6 and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
This is the desire that we need to have. When we are "cast down" (verse 5) we need to remember our God. When we are faced with temptation,
we need to desire God more than the temptation. Can I truly say that I "thirst for God", that my soul "pants" for God in the same way a deer pants for water (verses 1-2)? A deer desires water because it "needs" water, it is a matter of survival as well as pleasure. Do I really want God with a similar intensity, or is God just one of many things that I desire? The truth is that I need God just as a deer needs water, but in God's grace
I'm allowed to exist thinking that I don't really need Him. Deep healing will come when I truly long for God's presence in my life.
Lord, help me to desire You more. You are the source of life.
