Romans 14:23
23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.
In this passage Paul is talking about the controversy of what foods it is okay to eat, and says that if you have doubts about whether something is appropriate, listen to your conscience! Too often we go along with the crowd even when we feel uneasy about something, and end up doing something that we later regret. For example, if we are faced with an option of watching a certain movie, we need to pray about whether it would be helpful or hurtful to our recovery, rather than just going to see it "because all my friends are going to see it". We are called to a higher standard, to not just avoid intentional bad sin, but to act in faith, "for whatever does not proceed from faith is sin" (verse 23).
Lord, I confess to having gone along with the crowd even though I had doubts. Help me to listen to You through my conscience, and do what is right.
