1 John 1:5-7
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Verse 6 says "if we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth". This is a challenging statement, for it confronts my hypocrisy. I claim to be a Christian yet sometimes do not act like one. I "walk in darkness" when I turn away and pursue my own pleasure. When I do that, I am not practicing the truth of God, and am indeed being a hypocrite about what I claim to be true. The only hope for me is found in the next verse: "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin" (verse 7). Note that this doesn't say that there is no sin, but that we can be cleansed from that sin by the blood of Jesus as we walk in the light.
Lord, I confess to being a hypocrite, to saying that I follow You while at the same time indulging in sin. Please forgive me and cleanse me. Help me to walk in the light.
