1 Kings 12:6-8
6 Then King
Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father
while he was yet alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?” 7 And they said to him, “If you
will be a servant to this people today and serve them, and speak good words to
them when you answer them, then they will be your servants forever.”
8 But he abandoned the
counsel that the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who had
grown up with him and stood before him.
We often need outside counsel to make good choices. Particularly when you are stuck in your addiction, you need to re-learn how to make good choices. One of those choices is simply deciding who to listen to. Do you listen to the advice of similarly mixed-up "friends", or of people in recovery who have experience in dealing with these issues? Rehoboam made the mistake of ignoring the wisdom of experience and following the advice that sounded good to him. The result was the loss of his kingdom (verses 18-19). We need to learn from his mistake and listen to the voice of godly experience, even if we don't like what it says.
Lord, I confess to often wanting to just follow my own desires. Help me to seek and find good counsel.
