Hosea 9:1
Rejoice not, O Israel! Exult not like the peoples; for you have played the whore, forsaking your God. You have loved a prostitute's wages on all threshing floors.
Throughout the book of Hosea the people of Israel are likened to a prostitute. So what does it mean to "have played the whore" or "loved a prostitute's wages" (verse 1)? A whore is someone who is not committed or faithful. They don't really care about you, they just offer themselves to anyone who they think will benefit them. The wages are money, but not love. When we give ourselves to idols or anything that replaces God, we are looking to gain something for ourselves. We are more interested in the payment, what we get, than in the person of God. This is a sad but accurate depiction of our hearts at times.
God, please forgive me for not valuing you, for searching for life in all the wrong places.
