Isaiah 9:18-20
18 For wickedness burns like a fire; it consumes briers and thorns; it kindles the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in a column of smoke. 19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land is scorched, and the people are like fuel for the fire; no one spares another. 20 They slice meat on the right, but are still hungry, and they devour on the left, but are not satisfied; each devours the flesh of his own arm,
This passage illustrates one of the problems with sin: that it does not satisfy (verse 20). When we are caught up in lust we obsess over a person or object, thinking that having it will bring some joy to our life. But while it may feel good for a few moments, when it is over we are just as empty as before. Our appetite is never satisfied, but rather we continually want more. As we become desensitized, we end up turning to sins that are more
extreme and degrading to keep us excited. This is a sad picture of someone who is never satisfied, and who in our never-ending lust ends up hurting our brothers and sisters ("no one spares another" verse 19) as well as ourself ("devours the flesh of his own arm" verse 20).
Lord, help me to be satisfied with what you give me.
