Job 31:1
I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I gaze at a virgin?
Job was a man with a pure heart, and his statement here is a clue for us who are seeking purity. To begin with, he made a "covenant". This wasn't just some lazy wish, this was a serious commitment. Secondly, this was a covenant with his eyes. Job realized that his eyes were the gate by which he took in lustful thoughts. In order to get his lust under control, he had to get his eyes under control. We will never gain purity if we continue to gawk and "check out" women that we see in real life or in the media. But if we do stop looking lustfully, the temptations will be fewer and easier to handle. Not looking lustfully is actually both a help to our goal of purity as well as a good goal in itself, for the very act of looking lustfully is itself impure and degrading to the person. Are we ready to commit to this goal?
Lord, I want to make a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully.
