Matthew 5:13-16
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
In this teaching, Jesus says we are to be like salt and light. Both were good, welcomed things in the ancient world. In the same way, we should be a blessing to those around us. You should "let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven" (verse 16). But do people see goodness in us, or are we so lost in our fantasies that we emit a dim, feeble light to those around us? One of the things sin does to us is it distracts us from God's calling to be a light to the world. Jesus warns us that "if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything" (verse 13). Let us pray that we do not become so lost in sin and fantasies that we lose our saltiness.
Lord, help me to be salt and light to the world.
