Psalm 1:1-6
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
This Psalm offers a contrast of the godly and the ungodly. For one thing, the godly are pictured as stable, rooted trees (verse 3), whereas the ungodly are blown about by the wind (verse 4). If we are to live pure and godly lives, we will need to stand firm and develop strong spiritual roots. We must stay true to our convictions, and not be blown about by temptations and distractions. Another contrast in this Psalm is in the guidance of the godly and ungodly. The ungodly walk in "counsel of the wicked" (verse 1), whereas the godly "delight is in the law of the Lord" (verse 2). Can you truly say that you "delight in the law of the Lord"? Do we spend time studying God's word? Or do we spend more time in listening to the ungodly, perhaps via friends or media? The honest truth is that in order to develop strong spiritual roots that will enable us to resist temptation, we need to spend time in God's word, and learn to love it more than the entertainment of the world.
Lord, help me learn to delight in Your Word.
