Psalm 14:1-4
1 The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.
2 The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.
3 They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.
4 Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the Lord?
This psalm is about those who say "there is no God" (verse 1), who have "turned aside" (verse 3). I was struck by the poetic phrase in verse 4 about those who "eat up my people as they eat bread". This is a picture of one who uses other people, who only thinks about their own satisfaction and is blind to how their actions hurt others. Sadly, this can be said about many of us when we are stuck in our brokenness. When I see an attractive woman, do I see a child of God, or do I see a sex object that I can use, devour, and throw away when I am done? Is she just there to satisfy my own desires, or does she really have equal value to me? Stated in this stark way, the answers seem obvious, but all too often we use others for our own selfish pleasure.
Lord, forgive me for the times I have selfishly taken advantage of others.
