Psalm 51:3-5
3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Do I really know the depth of my sin? Or am I still in denial about how sinful I am? It is hard to see the ugliness inside us, to admit that we're not as good as we'd like to be. But the truth is that we are all sinful, we are born into sin (verse 5), and God is justified in His anger about our sin (verse 4). This is a scary thought, but also a humbling thought that can drive us to our knees. Thus when David was able to see his sin "ever before me" (verse 3), he was driven to admit his need for God's mercy.
God, so often I try to minimize my sin. I confess that I am sinful, more sinful than I even want to admit. Please forgive me, a sinner.
