Psalm 63:1-8
1 God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 2 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. 3 Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. 4 So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. 5 My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, 6 when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; 7 for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. 8 My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.
In this Psalm David expresses how he thirsts for God, as "in a dry and weary land where there is no water" (verse 1). This is a picture of a desperate man who truly needs water. It is an apt description of our spiritual state, but unfortunately we rarely reach that point of desperate need. Instead we think that we are doing okay, that we don't really need God, though He is nice to have around. For true healing to happen, we need to recognize that we are messed up, that we really do need God, that we are totally lost without Him, that we will spiritually die without Him. This is reality, and once we grasp it we will be drawn to Him. And when we draw close to God, we will discover that He is powerful (verse 2), loving (verse 3), and protective (we are in "the shadow of your wings" verse 7). That is reason to praise God (verse 4 & 5)!
O God, "my soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me" (verse 8).
